HOWTO: Update only selected areas of law
Details:
This article describes how to update only selected areas of law in TurboLaw, instead of updating all areas of law.
Prior to version 2.70 of TurboLaw, this was a manual process that had to be repeated each time you checked for updates. With version 2.70 of TurboLaw, however, came a new TurboLaw Update Utility which allows you to de-select an entire area of law and choose not to update it at all.
By default, TurboLaw will update all areas of law that are installed. However, some users may wish to limit TurboLaw's update to only one or more individual areas of law. For example, a user with a slow dial-up connection may only want to update the forms that they know they use, instead of waiting hours for the entire update to complete.
Resolution:
The TurboLaw Update Utility included with version 2.70 (and later) of TurboLaw allows you to select entire areas of law and set them to be effectively "ignored" during the update process. The new Update Utility also remembers your selections, so you only have to do this once.
NOTE: this process applies to the new TurboLaw Update Utility that was introduced with version 2.70 of TurboLaw. However, if you are using a computer with Windows 95, 98, or ME, you will not have the new Update Utility, as the newer versions of TurboLaw have discontinued support for these older versions of Windows. If you are still using one of these very old versions of Windows and need TurboLaw to restrict its automatic downloads for some reason, please contact TurboLaw Tech Support.
- Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet, and that your Internet connection is active. TurboLaw cannot check for updates if you are not on-line.
- Select "Check for Updates" from the "Updates" menu in TurboLaw.

- TurboLaw will close, and the TurboLaw Update Utility will appear and begin checking for available updates (as shown below).

- After the update check is complete, the Update Utility will display a list of available updates (if there are any - if there are no updates available then you cannot change the options at this time). Simply click the Groups button and un-check the area of law (or multiple areas of law) that you do not wish to update.

In the picture shown above, the area of law "MA/General Litigation" has been un-checked - this means that updates for MA/General Litigation will no longer be downloaded. - Click Next to continue with the update. Only updated documents from the areas of law that were checked will be downloaded - the areas of law you un-checked will be ignored.
Once this process is complete, the TurboLaw Update Utility will remember the area(s) of law that you chose not to receive updates for, and will not download any updates for those areas of law again - this includes during the "automatic" update which TurboLaw does by default every time you open the program.
If you change your mind and would like to start receiving updates for an area of law you had previously de-selected for updates, simply follow the steps above again, and re-select the areas of law that you had previously de-selected from the Groups button.
