HOWTO: Move TurboLaw from one computer to another

Details:

This article describes how to move TurboLaw from one computer to another. For example, if you have purchased a new computer and would like to move TurboLaw from your old computer to the new one, or if you need to move TurboLaw from one user's computer to another.

NOTE: if you are using TurboLaw on a network, then you probably will not need to "move" TurboLaw. You can simply install TurboLaw on your new workstation and use the "Configure for Network" option to point TurboLaw to the correct database on your network.

Please note that the instructions in this article cannot cover all possible scenarios. If in doubt, contact a qualified IT professional or TurboLaw Technical Support.

Resolution:

The TurboLaw Migration Wizard allows you to transfer (or "migrate") all of your cases, documents, and other TurboLaw data to a new computer in just a few simple steps.

  • File Name: tl_migrate_setup.exe
  • File Size: 3.34 MB
  • Download link: tl_migrate_setup

Click the link above to download the setup file for the Migration Wizard. (You must have TurboLaw already on your computer before you try to use the Migration Wizard.)

Once the Migration Wizard is installed, it will appear on your computer's Desktop, as well as on your Start menu (under Programs > TurboLaw > Utilities).

How to Use the TurboLaw Migration Wizard:

  1. Install the Migration Wizard on BOTH your old computer and your new computer. You must have installed TurboLaw before you can install or use the Migration Wizard.
  2. Run the Migration Wizard on your old computer and create a migration file. (Make sure TurboLaw is not open at the same time you try to do this.)
  3. Copy the migration file to your new computer. (You can use your network, a USB memory stick, or whatever means you have available.)
  4. Run the Migration Wizard on your new computer. (Make sure TurboLaw is not open at the same time you are doing this.) It will ask for the location of the migration file, and then it will move all of your cases and documents onto the new computer.

The Migration Wizard makes it very easy to move data quickly between TurboLaw computers, however, there are a few things to keep in mind, such as:

  • The Migration Wizard is NOT a tool for "synchronizing" changes between computers
  • Any cases you have set up to use "Alternate Case Folder" locations will be reset,.
  • If you have TurboLaw on a network, you probably don't need to use the Migration Wizard at all.
  • The Migration Wizard cannot be used to "merge" data from two computers together. If you have already entered some cases on your new computer, then the Migration Utility will replace those cases with the ones from your old computer. You will lose the cases you had entered on your new computer - you should only use the Migration Wizard to transfer your cases to a new, empty TurboLaw installation.

If you have any questions about the use of the TurboLaw Migration Utility, please contact TurboLaw Technical Support.
